Less cryptic errors

Today, a lot of possible exceptions go unhandled and users experience cryptic stack traces that tell them little about what they did wrong. In some cases, exceptions are handled but the failure is still obscure, like "failed to parse config file" when the problem is a completely missing config file.
- More manual error checking for issues not raising specific exceptions
- Handle more specific exceptions
- Handle all fall-trough exceptions to avoid stack traces
